My car is finally home from EXPO 9!!! Mad props to Pro Function« » Reply  Edit

Sorry for the long story, cliff notes. Picked up car, had a problem on drive home, Mcguyver'd it to get it working. Made it home from EXPO!!!

Well as most here know the bottom end blew on my car after the first session. Marc and Wai got me in touch with Mikey at Pro Function to fix my car.

It was finally ready this weekend so I flew to Chicago with my wife to pick up the car.

Mikey got us from the airport and the car was washed and ready to go. After a quick test drive to confirm everything was fine with headed off to Cleveland which was our stop before getting back to NY.

Everything was fine for the drive from Chicago to Cleveland. Motor felt fine for this leg of the trip, 5th gear passing was way better than before. This motor feels like it has some power and on Mikey's dyno it was pushing 186hp and his dyno reads low compared to Evans tuning. Probably mid 190's if I dyno at Jeff's.(Will be doing this at Jeff's when I find some time). Keep in mind this is close to a stock rebuild.

Here is where the fun starts.

I get out to car from the hotel in the morning and the car does not start. Not a big deal, get out the booster and it starts right away. Car had been sitting for a while and the optima batteies take a long time to charge. On my second one now.

So far so good, went 100 miles or so, crusing close to triple digits behind a lady in a G35. Then the car starts to stumble. Then it would not rev like there is a rev limiter or something. Pull over to the side of the highway but not sure what was wrong. Was thinking the motor blew up but it was still idling so that was not it. Looked for fluids under the car and did not see anything. Got back in car, tried to drive it and it only let me rev until 1500 rpm then it felt like a fuel cut.

Since the O2 sensor had been turned off as it was probably destroyed when the motor blew up. I thought it was that but I had already done 400 miles plus of driving. According to the GPS I was still 4 miles away from the exti off of I80. We thought we ran out of gas but the car still had over a 1/4 tank so we lug the car 4 miles!!!

We drove on the shoulder, rev car to 1500 rpm or so then fuel cut. This happened the whole way, thank god for some down hills where we could just let gravity pull the car. Got near the offramp. thank god the gas station was just around the bend.

We chugged the car into the station, filled up gas and of course it was not low on gas!!!

Then we pull the car to a shaded spot, I called Mikey, awesome support on July 4th. He walked me through some things, everything was fine, fuel pressure, no leaks etc... Did this for over an hour trying to figure out what the hell had gone wrong.

Then I checked the sensor connections, looked at the TPS on my ITR TB. Voila, the TPS which I knew was cracked from before, one of the pin connectors finally broke off!!! Got to get my edelbrock tb fixed asap now to replace this.

Now I was 400 miles from home and it was July 4th. My wife was worried we would need another tow! Obviously no parts stores around or even would be open. Luckily all my tools were in the car from EXPO. I went and got a cotter pin and jammed it into the connector. After a couple of trys I finally had a connection. Zip tied it down and the car was running like normal once again.

Moral of the story, never leave home on a long trip without tools! Lucky for me it was all there from expo!.

Now that is two expo's in a row where I fixed the car with a cotter pin. Last year it was the speed sensor, this year the TPS.

Mad props to Mikey for walking me through this. They run a very professional shop and their work is great. I can't even describe all of the things they fixed that the previous shop screwed up. I would easily recommend their shop to anyone. The sensor was always cracked, by the previous shop but seemed to work so I left it there while I get my edelbrock one fixed.

Last thing to add, the previous shop said they had put my ITR pistons in the previous motor. As it turns out what was in there were OEM GSR pistons with alot of miles. I suspect an old tired GSR block was dropped in after they messed up my first block and it must have been very used already. Previous motor burnt alot of oil.

Good to hear you two got home safe with the car, even with the minor hiccup! I love when a MacGyver fix is possible - makes the heart stop having an attack for sure!

Thanks Mel we are tired but definitely not as far as your drive was.

Today I have to put the street pads back on so I can drive it without the squeal from the track pads.

Noooes... track pad squeal = best. LOL

And yeah, our drive was pretty far... we both almost passed out on our first day on the way home, HAHA.

What a perfect storm that could have been. This speaks worlds for Pro Function and your Mcgyver skillz. Glad you made it home safely and sound. Now take your wife out to a nice seafood dinner.

Definitely, let Marc know and he can contact us. We are about an hour east of the NYC on the island but I drive half that everyday to work so meeting up anywhere in the city would be fine.

Glad to hear you made it home safe with the caR finally. And good to hear Profunction stepped to the plate and fixed two NY ITRs and did a good job.

Remember he still has my GSR tranny, ITR valve springs, valves and retainer. Cam caps from other head.... If you go back, you can have my tranny. It would be thanks in return for the R rods. I have your R pistons in a box.

Would that not be funny. I brought the car there with blown rings in the original GSR motor. I give them an ITR motor to rebuild and and an ITR tranny to install. I never get my block or tranny back. ITR motor blows 20 miles from shop. Then get GSR replacement block which could have been mine with new rings and then that blows! Of course we paid for the ITR rebuild and the replacement GSR bottom end work. Reminds me of your clutch story.

Damn! That is messed up.

No cotter pins for me as well but I replaced them myself when I did the front suspension maintenance. Also on both of our cars the transmission mount was only using one bolt? Not sure why the other hole was missing. On my car every other nut on the oil pan was missing. Had a colant leak on my itr intake manifold and found out it had two missing bolts....

Probably not worth the hassle as it just pains me to see how many people still go there and ours are not the only ones I have heard issues with.

Drive back was actually very enjoyable when everything is working fine. No oil burning and deccent power now even when the car is loaded up with all of the expo gear.

Thanks Rich, I was reading about what Keith wrote about your install. Is it running without the coolant leak now?
